Toyota Tacoma · Chantilly, VA

TACOMA PAINT PROTECTION FILM

The fourth-generation Tacoma has a higher, squarer hood than the truck it replaced, and on the TRD trims it carries a scoop in the middle. That hood faces straight into whatever the dump trucks on Route 28 and I-95 are dropping. The painted bumper corners and the hood edge chip first; the lower bumper is plastic and shrugs it off. Full front STEK film on a Tacoma covers the painted pieces and is finished in a day.

Below is where a Tacoma loses paint around Chantilly, how the three packages lay out on this truck, how we deal with the hood scoop, the sensors, and the Trailhunter's intake, and which trims use which pattern. The TRD in our gallery was filmed with a Gtechniq coating on top, which is the setup most Tacoma owners pick once they see how it washes.

What we see in the bay

WHERE A TACOMA TAKES DAMAGE

The hood and the scoop

The TRD hood scoop sits right in the airstream and its leading edge chips first, followed by the hood around it. The pattern is cut to follow the scoop so there is no bridging over the recess.

Painted bumper corners

The upper corners of the Tacoma bumper are body color and lead the truck into the wind. Chips here are the first thing you notice on a dark truck.

Fender tops behind big tires

Tacoma tires throw sand onto the fender tops and the arch edges, especially on TRD Off-Road and Pro trims with aggressive tread. Full front covers the full fender.

Door edges in a tight garage

A Tacoma's doors are long and the truck is wide, so door edges meet garage walls and the door cups get worked by gloves and keys. Full front extended picks those up.

Three packages

WHAT EACH PACKAGE COVERS ON THE TACOMA

Partial Front

High-impact zones only · Half a day

The painted bumper, the first 18 inches of the hood including the front of the scoop, the fender edges, and the mirrors. Leaves a line across the hood behind the scoop on TRD trims.

  • Full front bumper
  • Leading 18" of the hood
  • Leading edge of both fenders
  • Side mirrors
Most chosen

Full Front

What most drivers choose · One day

The full hood with the scoop, both fenders, the painted bumper, mirrors, headlights, and A-pillars. No seam on the hood. Our recommendation for a Tacoma that commutes on I-66 or the Toll Road.

  • Full hood
  • Full front bumper
  • Both full fenders
  • Side mirrors
  • Headlights
  • A-pillars

Full Front Extended

Front end plus the wear areas · One to two days

The full front package with rockers, door edges, and door cups on top. Tacomas that see gravel, job sites, or a boat ramp should take this one; the rockers behind the front tires are the first thing to get sandblasted.

  • Everything in Full Front
  • Rocker panels
  • Door edges and door cups
  • Door strips
  • A-pillars (halfway)

PAINTED VERSUS TEXTURED PLASTIC

The Tacoma's lower bumper is textured plastic on most trims. Film does not bond to that texture and it does not need protection, so the pattern covers the painted bumper sections and stops where the plastic starts.

SENSORS AND THE FRONT CAMERA

Parking sensors sit in the bumper and the front camera for the terrain monitor sits in the grille. Both are cut out of the pattern; the camera and the radar behind the Toyota emblem are never covered.

TRAILHUNTER INTAKE

The Tacoma Trailhunter carries a high-mount intake up the passenger A-pillar. The pillar piece on that side is cut around it; the rest of the front is the same as the other off-road trims.

Questions

TOYOTA TACOMA PPF QUESTIONS

Yes. The scoop is part of the hood and the pattern is cut to follow its shape, so the leading edge of the scoop, the hood around it, and the recess are all covered without stretching the film over a gap. It looks like paint.
