How to Wash and Care for PPF: The First 7 Days and the Next 12 Years

September 18, 20266 min read

You just picked up your car with fresh STEK DYNOshield on it. The film is warrantied for 12 years, but how long it looks brand new depends mostly on how it gets washed. Here is the care routine we give every PPF customer in Chantilly, from the first week to year twelve.

The first 7 days: let it cure

Film is applied with a slip solution, and a small amount of moisture stays under the film for a few days while the adhesive fully bonds. During that week you may see tiny water pockets or a little haze near edges. That is normal and it clears on its own. What you should do:

  • Do not wash the car for 7 days.
  • Do not pick at edges or press on any bubbles; they disappear as the moisture evaporates.
  • Park in the sun when you can. Heat speeds up curing and healing.
  • Skip the car wash entirely, including touchless, for the first week.

After that: hand wash or touchless only

Automatic brush washes are the number one thing that shortens film life. The brushes drag grit across the surface and catch edges. A two-bucket hand wash with a pH-neutral soap and a clean microfiber mitt is ideal. A touchless wash is fine when you are short on time. If you use a pressure washer, keep the wand at least a foot from the panel and never aim it directly at a film edge.

Bugs, bird droppings, and tar

DYNOshield takes this damage instead of your paint, but you still want it off quickly. Soak bugs and droppings with a wet towel or quick detailer for a minute, then wipe; do not scrub dry. Tar comes off with a dedicated tar remover on a microfiber. Nothing abrasive, ever.

Self-healing: how to use it

Light swirls and fine scratches in the top coat close up with heat. On a summer day in Northern Virginia the sun does it for you within an hour or two. In winter, pour hot (not boiling) water over the mark or park in a warm garage. Deep scratches that go through the top coat will not heal, but the film has still done its job by keeping the damage out of your clear coat.

What never to do

  • No wax or paste sealants on the film. They can leave residue at the edges. A ceramic coating on top is the right way to add gloss.
  • No abrasive polishes or compounds on the film.
  • No solvent-based cleaners other than a proper tar remover.
  • No brush car washes.

Ceramic coating on top of PPF

Most of our PPF customers add a coating, and this month's special includes one free with every full front. A coating makes the film slicker, so dirt rinses off with less contact, and it deepens the gloss. It bonds well to DYNOshield and does not affect self-healing or the film warranty. Read PPF vs ceramic coating for the full comparison.

Yearly checkup

Once a year, look over the edges after a wash. If you ever see a lifted corner, do not push it back down yourself; bring the car in and we will reseat or replace that piece. DYNOshield is warrantied for 12 years against yellowing, cracking, peeling, and delamination, and our installs carry a lifetime craftsmanship warranty, so any issue with the install itself is on us.

Hand wash, no brushes, no wax, let the sun do the healing. That is the whole routine.
